The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is today condemning the arrest of two Radio journalists by officer of National Security Agency (NSA) of the Transitional Federal Government.

Heavily armed forces entered the offices of Somaliweyn Radio, a privately owned Radio station in Mogadishu, on Sunday, 13 January, and arrested journalist Bashir Mohammed Abdulkadir after NSA officer told him that they want to question him.

Following hours of no news, Director of Somaliweyn Radio Abdirahman Mohamed Hudeyfi contacted the commander that arrested Bashir Mohammed Abdulkadir, but the commanding officer told the director to come to him. After the director met the NSA commander, Abdirahman Mohamed was also arrested by the commandant. The reason behind these arrests is unknown.

“We denounce this move and demand immediate and unconditional release of the two journalists” said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General. “Transitional Government must know that it is responsible of what its security forces are continuously doing”.
