NUSOJ calls for the release of Journalist Detained in Northern Somalia

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) today called for the immediate release of a journalist who was arrested in Las Anod town of Sool region on Friday, 3 January 2014 while photographing a women demonstration.

Faysal Jama Adan, a reporter for Radio Bar Kulan, was arrested by police in Las Anod in an attempt to stop Adan from covering the demonstration by businesswomen after number of businesswomen were arrested by the police on Thursday.

“We see Las Anod authorities continue to harass and intimidate journalists in an effort to prevent them from doing their work,” said Abdirisak Omar Ismail, President of NUSOJ Supreme Council.

“This arbitrary detention of Faysal Jama Adan fits a pattern of harassment on the part of authorities. Police should release Faysal Jama Adan immediately”.
